President's Message

Jamie Terrence
2017 Auxiliary President
Welcome to Del Rey Yacht Club's Auxiliary. We represent a unique group of individuals, both boaters and non-boaters, who are dedicated to tradition, philanthropy and camaraderie. Started over 50 years ago by a group of insightful women, DRYC's Auxiliary has developed into a diverse and far-reaching organization comprised of energetic, enthusiastic and talented members, both women and men.

You may find us sitting in the lounge on a Tuesday morning knitting warm scarves for the homeless. Once a month on a Thursday evening, we can be found at the Ocean Park Community Center (OPCC) in Santa Monica serving our homemade chili, cornbread and coleslaw to the homeless. On several Saturday mornings each year, we may be attending an educational class taught by our own Auxiliary members. We might be learning to make jewelry, greeting cards, appetizers, quilts and more. And on the second Wednesday of the month, you will find us at our social breakfast and monthly Auxiliary meeting, often followed by a speaker luncheon with fascinating guests telling their stories or lecturing on a relevant topic.

Additional activities include volunteering at the USO or participating in field trips, both local and out-of-town, where we relax with friends and learn so much. Each year, the Auxiliary donates funds to the Junior Sailing Scholarship program so that children who would not have the opportunity to learn to sail can do just that! We provide funds to the Mariner’s Outreach program designed to offer  the school children who live on Catalina Island a chance to visit interesting and educational sites on the mainland, such as the Holocaust Museum, or participate in a college preparatory program. Donations of food and clothing are also accepted by the Auxiliary volunteers who deliver them to SOVA and other organizations that help those in need.

Our Auxiliary volunteers are responsible for operating a Ship’s Store which sells nautical clothing and gear to members and their guests. Profits from Ship’s Store sales helps to fund many of the programs mentioned above. DRYC's member library is also operated by the Auxiliary and benefits all DRYC members who can borrow both fiction and nonfiction books to read on those long trips to Cat Harbor.

Each year the Auxiliary celebrates the “ Women on the Water” program which, among other projects, encourages women boaters to maintain and upgrade their skills. An award is presented by the Auxiliary to a woman who exemplifies how very talented women on the water can be. Our annual Fashion Show features a different  line of clothing each year presented by our own Auxiliary runway models. It is both an enjoyable afternoon and an opportunity for members to explore new fashion possibilities.

DRYC's Auxiliary is open to all members of our club and we welcome our newest as well as those more seasoned members to renew their Auxiliary membership or join for the first time. So give us a try if you have never been a member or come on back if you were a member in the past. Don’t miss the opportunity to be a part of this great organization.

We’re waiting for you!
