Juniors News

DRYC is proud to now have a fleet of new Opti's! We introduced these into our Spring Program 2013, along with new Opti classes in the summer program starting with the Intermediate sailors up to the advanced racing classes.

We are pleased to welcome Michael Hanson as our new Head Coach for the Junior Sailing Program. Mike comes from a long tradition of sailing, his roots stemming from Lake Minnetonka in Minnesota, where he raced Optimist Dinghies, X Boats, 420’s, and various types of scows. In the winters, when the lakes freeze over and “soft water” sailing becomes unavailable, Mike participates in the Midwest Ice-Sailing circuit. Mike’s sailing career led him to the University of Hawaii, where he competed on the Varsity Sailing Team. As a Hawaii Rainbow, he sailed in regattas on both sides of the continental United States, as well as enjoyed the wind and weather of Hawaii. Majoring in English, some of Mike’s greatest passions off the water are reading, writing, and traveling. Mike just spent a year abroad, teaching English in Hong Kong, and taking time to travel around South-East Asia. Overall, Mike enjoys working with kids in a fun and competitive environment, and strives to continue the tradition of excellence that has led the Del Rey Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program to become one of the premier sailing programs in the nation.

Congratulations DRYC Junior Cassie Obel! Cassie, 17, was featured in an article in Sailing World's Jan/Feb 2015 issue called "The Performance Generation". She was chosen as one of USA's sailing's best up-and-coming youth sailors. Cassie sites DRYC Junior and sailing partner, Annika Garrett, as the most influential person in her sailing life. Congrats Cassie and Annika!
